How ON Semiconductor Test’s Automotive Imaging Applications

At ON Semiconductor we know that imaging applications need to perform in challenging conditions and must operate 100% of the time. So we put our image sensors through tough, real-world tests so you can have confidence in the products you get from us.

Watch as ON Semiconductor engineers ensure you’re safety when testing automotive imaging reliability that is critical for autonomous driving.

In the lab we try to recreate similar challenging lighting conditions that automotive image sensors operate in every day. Issues are recreated in robust repeatable manner in a control environments. This enables us to understand the performance of our image sensors across a wide range of lighting challenges. In the field we’re checking to see if our sensor meets its requirements and is robust enough for the real world.

We also want to discover things that are unexpected, only by putting our sensors into these challenging situations are we able to get this kind of information. Images are analyzed with objective metrics with the most subjective perception thus enabling a common language between ON Semiconductor and the customer.

We cannot just trust our eyes when it comes to major safety decisions being made from image sensor output. Our imaging test vehicle allows us to mount our sensors in various locations around the car. We mount our cameras to emulate typical automotive imaging sensor applications such as surround view, rearview, forward view and in cabin. This enables us to gather data on sensor performance in the specific scenarios that it is decided for.

We anticipate real-life situations, and then put our image sensors to the test, whether they be challenging lighting situations, adverse weather conditions, or broad temperature ranges. It is important that we test our sensors in the same scenarios and situations that our customers do to ensure they work, not just in the lab, but in real life too.
