TTI, Inc., a leading specialty distributor of electronic components, is now stocking the VCNL36687S proximity sensor from Vishay. This sensor is targeted to meet the requirements of light industrial, medical, smartphone, camera and tablet applications.
The fully integrated proximity sensor includes a high power VCSEL coupled with a photodiode for presence and proximity sensing in an SMD package. It incorporates the photodiodes, amplifiers, and analog to digital conversion circuits into a single CMOS ASIC. It has a sensing range of up to 20cm (7.9 in) at 20 mA pulsed current where other sensors need up to 200 mA. With no need for mechanically isolating the emitter and detector, this component significantly simplifies the design-in process. The LLC surface mount package with a low profile 1mm height makes this a perfect candidate for tight spaces with minimal real-estate requirements.
This sensor includes a program interrupt function through its I2C bus serial interface. This allows for easy access to the “proximity signal” to utilize the wake-up function in the microprocessor when a proximity change occurs, which is helpful in reducing the overall processing overhead and power requirements. Average current consumption at MAX forward current is 0.80 mA making the VCNL36687S well suited for battery operated and power sensitive applications.
VCNL36687S has an unlimited shelf life and is compatible with reflow solder processes according to JEDEC-STD-020D, the devices are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green.
